Chapter 188: Worry
A young girl sat beside a bed, her gaze fixed on the person lying there. Her small face was filled with a mixture of curiosity and genuine concern. She cautiously extended a hand and poked the man on the bed.
He still didn't react.
She lowered her head and pouted. Why wasn't he waking up? Weren't humans supposed to be fine after a short nap? Was there something wrong with her technique?
The air in the room was tense, filled with a palpable anxiety.
After a long time, a person's voice finally broke the silence.
"Is he okay?"
The person on the bed stirred slightly. He opened his eyes slowly and looked around. The room was dimly lit, and a small figure was seated beside him.
"You're awake!" the small figure exclaimed.
He tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through his head, forcing him to lie back down.
"Don't move," the small figure said. "You're still weak."
He closed his eyes again, trying to recall what had happened. Fragments of memory flickered through his mind – a blinding light, a loud noise, a feeling of being thrown through the air.
"What happened?" he asked, his voice hoarse.
"You were hurt," the small figure replied. "But don't worry, I'm here now."
He opened his eyes again and looked at the small figure more closely. It was a young girl, no older than six or seven, with bright, intelligent eyes.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"My name is Ling'er," the girl said. "And you are my savior."
He was confused. Savior? What was she talking about?
Ling'er saw his confusion and explained. "You saved me. From the bad people."
He still didn't understand. What bad people? Where were they?
Just then, the door to the room opened, and a man entered. He was tall and burly, with a stern expression.
"He's awake," Ling'er said to the man.
The man approached the bed and looked at him closely.
"You're lucky to be alive," the man said. "That was a nasty fall."
He tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come out.
"Rest now," the man said. "We'll talk later."
The man and Ling'er left the room, leaving him alone with his thoughts. He was still disoriented and confused, but a sense of unease began to settle in. Where was he? And what had truly happened?
He closed his eyes, hoping that sleep would bring some clarity. But his mind raced with questions and worries. He was in a strange place, with people he didn't know, and he had no memory of how he got there. A knot of anxiety tightened in his chest. He was worried, deeply worried, about what the future held.
