Chapter 199: The Old Man
The man who arrived was named Lao Zhou. He appeared to be around seventy years old, thin but spry, and had a long white beard. His face was ruddy and wrinkled, and his eyes were narrowed, gleaming with a shrewd light.
He held a large copper pipe in his hand and walked with a slow, deliberate pace. Behind him followed a young man, perhaps in his twenties, who carried a small cloth bag.
"Lao Zhou, you've arrived," greeted the old man, whose name was Grandpa Liu.
"Little Liu, you called for me?" Lao Zhou asked, his voice hoarse and rough like sandpaper.
"Yes, take a look at this," Grandpa Liu said, gesturing towards the wooden box.
Lao Zhou shuffled over and bent down to examine the box carefully. He tapped it with his pipe, ran his fingers along the edges, and sniffed at the wood. After a while, he straightened up and stroked his beard.
"This is good wood," he said slowly. "Huanghuali. And it's old. Very old."
"Can you tell how old?" Grandpa Liu pressed.
Lao Zhou closed his eyes for a moment, concentrating. "Based on the grain and the oxidation, I'd say at least two hundred years. Maybe even older."
A murmur went through the small group gathered around. Two hundred years was a considerable age for anything made of wood.
"And what about what's inside?" Grandpa Liu asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Lao Zhou opened his eyes and looked at Grandpa Liu. A hint of a smile touched his lips. "That, Little Liu, is something else entirely."
